Freddie Peart, Founder
(Founder; Fred Peart)

The beginning

Fred Peart started up 'F. Peart & Co. Ltd.' in 1923, using every penny he had to his name, and most of his wife’s to boot. The firm began life as a coal and coke merchants, operating with a horse and cart on the streets of Hartlepool, and became a limited company in 1925.

1930s-1940s

During the 1930s, the company’s success led to the introduction of motorised transport. Using these vehicles during the quieter summer months to haul pit props to his coal suppliers, Fred learned about the timber trade.

He established his own timber factory in the early 1940s, moving into the sale of timber and fencing products. Post-war demand was tremendous, and business boomed.

1950s

By the early 1950s, Pearts offered timber, steel and concrete fencing. Complementary ranges of park and garden furniture were also introduced (an octagonal tree seat costing a very reasonable £50 16s 2d).

1960s

By the 1960s, the demand for fencing and erection was so high that a motor fleet was established to deliver fencing nationally (erection work was mostly limited to the North East). Electric fencing also arrived, followed by crash barrier fencing for the newfangled motorways.

As the company expanded, it outgrew its original business premises in York Road. The move was made to its current location in Baltic Street in 1962, the year that also saw the death of founder Fred Peart.
